Abstract
Introduction: preterm birth is a premature obstetric labor before 37 weeks gestation, and is the most important cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality; there are several factors associated with the occurrence of this event.
Objective: to summarize the variables presenting significant statistical association with the development of premature births in pregnant from North Area University Policlinic of Ciego de Ávila province, during the period 2011-2012.
Method: a case-control research in the North Area of Ciego de Ávila municipality in the period 2011-2012 was carried out. The universe was composed of the total of women delivering between 22 and 36,6 weeks. The information was collected using a form with the variables to study and obstetric medical records and cards of the patients were used.
Analysis and Discussion: the factors that presented significant statistical association with preterm birth were: history of abortions in previous pregnancies, low maternal weight, insufficient weight gain during pregnancy, anemia during pregnancy, vaginal and urinary infections. Describing the impact of preterm birth on the newborn, it was established that low birth weight, respiratory diseases and infections during the neonatal period in both years were the most frequent complications.
