Social and ethical issues related to the use of new technologies in the field of hemodialysis
Abstract
Introduction: the use of new technologies in the field of hemodialysis raises social and ethical issues of great relevance, since it is a course of renal replacement therapy that requires complex technologies and allows to prolong the patient's life but it can become in a form of persisting medical treatment; the decision to include a patient in an hemodialysis program iterated is difficult and ethically complex cause it must be considered as well as the doctor's opinion, the patients and their families opinions.
Objective: to provide updated information to specialists of Nephrology services in the province about social and ethical issues that cause decisions on the use of new technologies in hemodialysis and the inclusion or removal of patients from hemodialysis programs.
Method: a literature search was carried out on different national and foreign data basis available on Internet and printed literature was consulted; the most updated works were selected and, from them, a review on the subject was prepared.
Conclusions: the introduction of a new technology in hemodialysis must comply with the principles of scientific research and medical practice, and it requires the development of a socialization process both inherent technical aspects to their use as social and bioethical implications that may mean for patients and their families.
