Characterization of chronic renal failure (stage V) at the Hemodialysis Service of the Provincial General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" of Ciego de Ávila
Abstract
Introduction: chronic renal insufficiency is defined as decreased kidney function with a glomerular filtration rate <60 ml/min, it means that it is ranging from stage III to V of chronic kidney disease.
Objective: to characterize chronic renal insufficiency (stage V) in patients from Hemodialysis Service at the Provincial General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" of Ciego de Ávila.
Method: a descriptive observational research in the Department of Hemodialysis, from September 2012 to September 2014, was carried out. The universe consisted of all patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (stage V) in dialysis regime; a purposive sample of 52 patients who met the study inclusion criteria was selected.
Results: patients were predominantly male (55,7 %) and white skin color (65,4 %). Hypertension was the leading cause of chronic kidney disease; main symptoms and signs at the beginning of the disease were edema, polyuria, nocturia and nausea. Most patients do not have familiar and personal history of chronic kidney disease, neither prior use of nephrotoxic drugs; it was found that 53,8 % were carriers of hepatitis C.
Conclusions: the characterization of the stage V of chronic kidney disease in patients from Hemodialysis Service revealed important variables that influence on their onset and progression. Hence it is vital the early detection of the disease and its risk factors for an early treatment and prevention of complications.Downloads
