Introduction: diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness in adults with diabetes mellitus and is diagnosed by examining the fundus of the eye. Currently, several international studies use smartphones for the diagnosis and evolution of various retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.
Objective: to show the diagnosis and evolution of a patient with diabetic retinopathy through images taken with a smartphone.
Case presentation: a 60-year-old type I diabetic patient is presented who attended the consultation, she reports a slow and progressive decrease in visual acuity. The retinal examination was conclusive towards proliferative diabetic retinopathy with high-risk characteristics in the right eye and severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the left eye. After the first session of laser panphotocoagulation, indicators of regression of diabetic retinopathy were observed in the patient, such as a decrease in microaneurysms, microhemorrhages and neovessels, which, along with the diagnosis of this entity, were photodocumented through the capture of retinal images with the use of a smartphone and a Volk spherical lens of +20 dioptersDownloads
