Phacoemulsification cataract surgery
Abstract
Introduction: cataract surgery is the result of many years in the evolution of biomedical techniques and technologies. Phacoemulsification is the choice of most surgeons.
Objective: to describe demographic and clinical-surgical aspects in cataract operated by the phacoemulsification technique.
Methods: a descriptive, longitudinal and prospective investigation was carried out on 56 operated (63 eyes) with a diagnosis of cataract by phacoemulsification in the Ophthalmological Center of Ciego de Ávila between: October/2017-September/2018, which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ophthalmological physical examination was always carried out by the same researcher. Ethical principles were met.
Results: the female sex (53,57 %), the age group from 51 to 60 years (30,36 %) and the primary open angle glaucoma (17,46 %) as antecedent prevailed. Endothelial cell density did not show significant loss (preoperative: 77,78 % and postoperative: 60,32 %). The majority (69,84 %) improved postoperative visual acuity. The sphere varied by a mean (preoperative: -1,01D to postoperative: 0,13D) and the cylinder decreased (-0,88D to -0,75D). There were almost no intraoperative complications (93,65 %) and, among postoperative complications, posterior capsule opacity (25,40 %) was the most frequent.
Conclusions: it predominated in women, in the group between 50 and 59 years old, and primary open-angle glaucoma as an ocular pathological antecedent. Postoperative improvement in corrected visual acuity, permissible changes in the corneal endothelium and refractive values close to emmetropia were achieved.
