Introduction: knee pain is associated with joint anatomical and functional deterioration. Medications and surgical procedures are used for its treatment, which are not exempt from adverse effects. Objective: to evaluate the therapeutic results of acupuncture and auriculopuncture as traditional bioenergetic techniques in patients with pain in the knee joint.
Methods: randomized experimental study, developed between January and May 2018 in 65 patients who were attended in the emergency room of the Hospital of Ciego de Ávila with pain in the knee. All had medical treatment and met the research criteria. They were assigned to two groups: group I was treated with acupuncture and group II with auriculoacupuncture. Non-parametric statistical techniques were used according to the type of variable to be analyzed, with a significance level of 0.05. Ethical aspects were met.
Results: 40,00 % of the patients were between 30 and 50 years old, and both groups were homogeneous in terms of age and sex. Although in both groups most of the patients were evaluated as well, there were significant differences in favor of treatment with auriculoacupuncture (44,62 % were evaluated as well). With auriculoacupuncture, the ailments of 23 patients evolved well in less than seven months; 18 of them achieved it with acupuncture, with significant differences. Only 12,31 % presented adverse reactions, with no significant differences between the groups. A decrease in the amount of medications consumed daily was observed.
Conclusions: bioenergetic techniques provided a considerable improvement in pain, reduced medication consumption and caused few adverse reactions.Downloads
