El Eco Científico, first Avilanian journal of science and medicine
Abstract
Introduction: medical scientific journals for several centuries have the function of disseminating the results of research in the field of health and providing updated information.
Objective: to identify the documentary historical evidences that confirms the existence of El Eco Científico as a printed publication predecessor to the current MediCiego.
Method: qualitative research was carried out at the University of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Ávila, between January and September 2018. The historical-logical method, the documentary analysis technique and the interview were used.
Results: the existence of El Eco Científico magazine was verified in the National Library "José Martí". This was corroborated in the Avilanian local newspaper El Pueblo, kept in the Provincial Library of Ciego de Ávila.
Conclusions: El Eco Científico magazine has been rescued from oblivion, 101 years after its founding. This historical finding places it among one of the first of the regional biomedical publications in Cuba. In its first stage was published in Ciego de Ávila and had two volumes that covered the years 1917, 1918 and 1919.
