Histopronostic factors of mortality in women surgically operated for infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast
Abstract
Introduction: breast cancer is a growing and challenging problem for health services worldwide. It is the first cause of death by cancer in women in the world and the second cause of death in Cuba by malignant tumors.
Objective: to determine the possible association between histopronostic factors and the mortality of women surgically intervened for infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast.
Method: an analytical observational study of cases and controls was carried out in the Pathology Department of the General Provincial Teaching Hospital Dr. “Antonio Luaces Iraola” of Ciego de Ávila, in the period from January 2002 to December 2017. It worked with the population of 303 women. The cases were the patients who died in that period of time and the controls who survived.
Results: the age group of 54-60 years (34,32 %) and grades I and II (82,84 %) predominated. In almost all of the deaths the tumor exceeded 10 mm (17,82 %) with a risk of 13,3 times; in more than half there were more than three affected nodes (11,22 %) with a 29-fold risk and vasculolymphatic invasion (21,54 %) with a 3,4-fold risk.
Conclusions: as histopronostic factors, tumor size greater than 10 mm, lymph node metastases and vasculolymphatic invasion were statistically significant, demonstrating their association with mortalityDownloads
