Bibliography was reviewed on the disease American Leishmaniasis and the visceral Leishmaniasis, aiming at updating doctors and nurses with the knowledge about it; for this is a frequent disease in the American conteinent where many health care professionals are on mission. It was found that it is by the agency of an insect bite of some kind of (Lutzia) sand fly beloning to the subgenus Phlebotomus. It is a parasitic cutaneous disease, involving the mucosa and viscera; its incubation period may vary from two weeks to one year in the case of the American Leishmaniasis and the visceral type as long as from ten days to 24 months; its reservoir, being the marsupials, rodents, dogs, horses and man. Its treatment depends on the way this illness develops.
