Brachial plexus block associated to general anesthesia in shoulder arthroscopy
Abstract
Introduction. The anesthetic management of patients during Shoulder arthroscopy varies between the use of pure anesthetic techniques and the combination of them. The association of regional techniques (brachial plexus block) and general anesthesia has contributed to keep transoperatory stability and adequate postoperative recovery. Method. An observational descriptive and prospective study was carried out to evaluate the usefulness of the brachial plexus block associated to general anesthesia in patients admitted for Shoulder arthroscopy in the Provincial Hospital of Ciego de Avila. The sample consisted of 35 patients in which we made an interescalenic brachial plexus block before the induction of general anesthesia. Results and Discussion. Most of the cases had a total nerve block and none failed. Hipotensive drugs were needed in 7 cases (20%). All the patients had Claude Bernard-Horner syndrome as a secondary effect and low values of AVS until the first 24 hours after operation. Conclusions. The brachial plexus block associated to general anesthesia is useful, it has just a few secondary effects and improves the transoperative and postoperative evolution of the patients.
