Predominance of the infection by hepatitis B and C viruses in donors of the Blood Bank of Ciego de Avila province between 2008 and 2012
Abstract
A prospective descriptive observational study was carried out with the aim of determining the prevalence of hepatitis B and C virus infection in donors from the Provincial Blood Bank of Ciego de Ávila during the period from January 2008 to December 2012. Both infections occurred more frequently in relatively young male donors, between 31 and 40 years of age with 14 (23.3%) and 53 (23.9%) cases, respectively. Ciego de Ávila was the municipality with the highest number of donors infected with both viruses, with 21 cases (35.0%) infected with virus B and 83 (37.5%) with virus C. The risk factor associated with transmission of the B virus in the donors was risky sexual behavior with 25 cases (41.6%) and in the case of the C virus it was the history of having undergone some surgical intervention with 91 (41.1%). Of the 36,474 donors studied, 60 (0.1%) were infected with the B virus and 221 (0.6%) with the C virus, both being considered as low prevalence during the study period.Downloads
