Abstract

Introduction: hypernephroma has, among all malignant tumors, a presenting frequency of 3 % and is the most common adult renal tumor. This neoplasm may originate from one of the renal poles; as it expands, compresses the adjacent tissue and displaces calyces, blood vessels and renal pelvis. It can move intraperitoneal organs, raise the diaphragm and invade muscles and neighboring organs. Among signs of worse prognosis of the disease are cited age younger than 40 years, fever, hypertension, palpable tumor, bilateralism of the process or solitary kidney, renal vein extension or lymph ducts and extrarenal extension; the use of ultrasonography and computed tomography allow the detection of incidental renal masses, helping to improve the prognosis of these patients.

Case report: 50 year old patient, white, male, smoker, with a history of hypertension, which goes to the Urology Outpatient of the Provincial General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" of Ciego de Ávila, cause he presented low back pain and macroscopic hematuria. In the physical examination a palpable abdominal tumor mass, which makes suspect the existence of a renal carcinoma, was found; the diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography and the histopathological analysis after radical nephrectomy of the left kidney.

Conclusions: a new case of a large size renal-cell carcinoma of the left kidney is provided, diagnosed in advanced stage, and with few symptoms
