Burnout syndrome in professionals of the Oncology Service of the Hospital in Ciego de Ávila
Abstract
Introduction: burnout syndrome is described as an inadequate way of coping with chronic stress, and it is very frequent among health professionals.
Objective: to identify the burnout syndrome in professionals of the Oncology Service of the Hospital “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola ” of Ciego de Ávila.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational research was carried out in the period between January 2017 and April 2018. The study universe consisted of 16 professionals. A structured interview, the Maslach Burnout Inventory psychodiagnostic technique and the list of indicators of vulnerability to stress were applied. Ethical principles were met.
Results: among those affected, female nursing staff predominated. The average age was 36,38 years; 100 % of the professionals were married and the time of experience in the service was more than five years. Most were satisfied from a work point of view. The psychodiagnostic technique revealed high scores in the items of the emotional exhaustion dimension (56,25 %), low depersonalization (25,00 %) and low personal fulfillment (43,75 %). The dimension most affected in professionals was emotional exhaustion (56,25 %). Only in one case (6,25 %), a nursing professional, was burnout syndrome detected. The list of indicators of vulnerability to stress revealed a high frequency (56,25 %) of the appearance of psychosomatic disorder.
Conclusions: a nursing professional with burnout syndrome was identified, in addition to the presence of high levels of work stress in the professionals studied.Downloads
