Introduction: pregnancy accentuates the gingival response to local irritants. This can produce a clinical picture with negative effects for the mother and the fetus.
Objective: to describe, according to clinical and epidemiological variables, the state of periodontal health in pregnant women treated at the "Bolívar y Martí" Comprehensive Diagnostic Center, Sucre state, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the period from February 1 from 2017 to October 31, 2018.
Methods: cross-sectional descriptive observational study with the total number of pregnant women treated in the aforementioned place and period of time (N=82) and who met the voluntary requirements established for the study and the ethical principles.
Results: more than half of the pregnant women had periodontal disease, a condition that prevailed in all age groups. Incorrect oral hygiene habits were more frequent in the sick population, while harmful habits were equally prevalent in patients with or without periodontal disease. The need for more frequent treatment corresponded to code 2. More than 80% of the children with low weight and preterm births occurred in pregnant women with periodontal disease.
Conclusions: it was evidenced that low birth weight and preterm deliveries were more frequent in pregnant women with periodontal pathologies. These data demonstrate the repercussion of periodontal disease in the appearance of low birth weight and preterm delivery and the need for oral health care in pregnant women
