Introduction: it is necessary to prepare the medical student in the correct application of the clinical method in patients with possible surgical disease.
Objective: to characterize some elements of the curricular design and the current state of the dynamics of the teaching-learning process of the clinical method in the clinical-surgical profile subjects of the Medicine career.
Methods: a pedagogical research was carried out at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Ávila in the 2020-2021 academic year. A documentary analysis was carried out on the E study plan and evaluative instruments were applied (survey and observation of education at work to 126 inmates, randomly selected, and a survey to the 25 teachers). Methodological triangulation was applied. Ethical principles were met.
Results: from the design, the significance of the clinical method was identified in the professional model and in the subject programs of the main integrating discipline, with close complementary links with other subjects of the disciplines of the profession and with this, it acquires the condition of vertical training axis. The greatest uniqueness of the content was in the fourth and fifth year subjects. However, methodological insufficiencies are evident in the guidelines for teachers. From the dynamics, the students showed difficulties in their preparation and in the application of the clinical method.
Conclusions: although from the design the importance of the clinical method in the professional model and its condition as a vertical training axis was identified, from the dynamics the students showed insufficient preparation
