Obstruction of airways by foreign bodies in childhood.

Abstract

The introduction to the theme of foreign bodies in the airways for the significance of this event in childhood. Some anatomical characteristics of the bronchial tree are slightly given, as well as some clinical and radiologic features that make us suspect os such diagnosis. 1500 clinical records admissions to "Agramonte Peña" Provincial Pediatric Hospital were reviewed. A low incidence was observed i.e. 42 cases (2,8%) of foreign bodies in the airways with the highest incidence found in patients with ages between 1-5 years where males prevailed. Criteria on the pathophysiology was established. Analysis of the nature of foreign bodies showed a clear predominance to dry fruit; major symptoms were coughing,dysnea, peribuccal cianosis in frequency order. Norms were set for their adecuate extraction and  results of such series are remarked.
