Tobacco and alcohol consumption in adolescents from the community "El Delirio", Guárico state, Venezuela

Abstract

Introduction: alcohol and tobacco are the legal drugs most frequently consumed by the young population.

Objective: to describe the characteristics of tobacco and alcohol consumption in adolescents from "El Delirio" Community, Guárico state, Venezuela.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from January to December 2018. The universe consisted of 298 adolescents between 12 and 15 years old. The sample was made up of 96 adolescents. Semi-structured interview techniques, review of individual and family medical records, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test were used to identify levels of risk. Ethical principles were met.

Results: the consumption of tobacco and alcohol prevailed in male (69,79 %), mostly aged between 14 and 15 years (40,63 %), who went to night recreation sites (60,42 %). Family history of consumption was identified as influential (50,00 %), with a medium risk level for alcohol consumption (72,93 %).

Conclusions: although the level of risk for alcohol consumption was medium, the results alert authorities and professionals to prioritize promotional and preventive actions in male adolescents with relatives who consume.
