Characterization of the nutritional, functional, anthropometric and dietary status of retired older adults of Interior Ministry
Abstract
Introduction: the assessment of nutritional status constitutes a key aspect in the care of the elderly population.
Objective: to characterize from the dietary, clinical and anthropometric points of view, the nutritional status of retired older adults treated in the Combatant Polyclinic during the period from March 2017 to March 2018.
Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional study of the universe of 61 retired older adults from Interior Ministry who attended a consultation was carried out. The Mini Nutritional Assessment was used as a tool.
Results: from these patients 37,70 % were from the group of 70-79 years. Women predominated (59,02 %); 96,72 % lived with other people; 6,89 % received family care. Their family per capita was good (54,10 %) and regular (45,90 %); 72,13 % consumed three or more medications daily, 54,10 % had oral conditions; 75,41 % practiced physical activities; 77,05 % suffered acute illnesses in the last trimester and 100,00 % a chronic illness; 52,46 % made less than three meals; 80,33 % used reheated animal fat; 63,93 % had toxic habits; only 31,15 % would eat fruits and vegetables daily; 63,93 % were malnourished by excess; 40,98 % had a tricipital fold above the 50th percentile; 42,62 % had a raised arm muscle circumference; 80,30 % had some type of malnutrition and 19,7 % risk of malnutrition.
Conclusions: bad eating habits and diets with a tendency to obesity, malnutrition due to excess, and the presence of conditions suggestive of malnutrition predominated.Downloads
