Abstract
Introduction: in Ciego de Avila breast cancer is a huge health problem. It is increasingly worrying for health services its high incidence and prevalence.
Objective: to determine the efficacy of breast ultrasound in the pre-surgical staging.
Method: a cross-sectional study was conducted in patients treated in the Multidisciplinary Consultation of Mastology at the Provincial General Teaching Hospital “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” from July 2012 to July 2013. Sensitivity in the staging of clinical stage and tumor (capacity test for a subject ill with values 80% and 95% respectively) were calculated. In the staging of node was of great importance calculating specificity (98%) with a validity index of 69,57. The agreement between observers was considered acceptable with a value of 0,32. The validity of ultrasonographic examination in the pre-surgical staging was checked.
Conclusions: the ultrasound method is capable of diagnosing breast tumors accurately and, sometimes, axillary lymph nodes.
