Diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease in the elderly. A necessary revision

Abstract

Introduction: aging brings damaging consequences in renal function and alterations in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Chronic kidney disease is a common complication of diabetes mellitus; this is the main cause that requires renal replacement therapy. Actually the high life expectancy, and the high incidence of diabetes mellitus, leads to an increase in diabetes-related chronic kidney disease in the elderly.

Objective: to carried out a review on diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease in the elderly, with emphasis on fundamental characteristics of news on the subject.

Method: a comprehensive literature search was carried out, which were no restrictions on the type of study. Abstracts were reviewed and, where necessary the full articles; all items included recommendations on diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease in the elderly were taken into account.

Conclusions: the review showed that diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease are the major diseases in the elderly, which are accompanied by organic and functional alterations of age.
