Introduction: professional development is a strategic process in medical education, essential for ensuring academic excellence and addressing contemporary challenges. The “One Health” approach integrates human, animal, and environmental health, requiring its incorporation into the teaching of Microbiology and Parasitology.
Objective: to identify the professional development needs of Microbiology and Parasitology faculty at the “Dr. José Assef Yara” Faculty of Medical Sciences in Ciego de Ávila regarding the implementation of the “One Health” approach.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study (2023–2025) involving 13 professionals. Data collection methods included surveys, interviews, observation guides, and document analysis. Data were processed using descriptive statistics in SPSS 10.0, with expert review and institutional ethical approval.
Results: findings revealed limited knowledge of the approach, low motivation, and minimal self-study. All professionals (100,00 %) acknowledged the need for training, although the approach is not currently institutionalized within professional development plans.
Conclusions: the study revealed deficiencies in faculty preparation for implementing “One Health,” alongside strengths such as a willingness to update their knowledge. These findings provide a basis for designing professional development programs tailored to the current demands of medical education.
