Efficacy of aerobic exercise on cognitive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia
Keywords:
aerobic training, schizophrenia, physical exerciseAbstract
Introduction: shizophrenia is a psychiatric disease that affects 1% of the population. Its symptoms are not pathognomonic; they are distinguished as positive (hallucinations and delusions), negative (avolition and anhedonia), and cognitive (deficits in memory, attention and executive functions). In patients with the latter, treatment is ineffective. A current novel approach to treating them is aerobic exercise.
Objective: to analyze the current state of scientific information about the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia.
Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out, during which 149 articles in English and Spanish were consulted, available in the databases PubMed, Cinahl, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, Academic, LILACS, IBECS, CENTRAL, SciELO and WOS.
Development: a sample of 302 patients with schizophrenia (from seven studies) was analyzed, whose aerobic exercise frequencies were from one to five weekly sessions, for twelve weeks. The scientific evidence derived from this analysis shows that the cognitive symptoms of the patients improved as a result of the use of this therapy.
Conclusions: the practice of aerobic exercises by patients with treatment-refractory schizophrenia contributed to increasing their intrinsic motivation, improving their neurocognitive functioning, interpersonal relationships, and quality of life. This review provides a systematization of current knowledge about this type of exercises in the field of mental health, particularly as a valuable tool inthe treatment of schizophrenia.
