Results of the scientific-student activity of the extension chair of natural and traditional medicine “Juan Tomas Roig”

Abstract

Introduction: in the honorary professorship “Juan Tomás Roig” of the Faculty of Medical Sciences “Dr. José Assef Yara”, the scientific-student activity integrated with the academic and extension was conceived with intention towards the contents of natural and traditional medicine based on the solution of the main health problems, the development of research skills and the promotion of community work in disease prevention.

Objective: to evaluate the scientific-student activity on natural and traditional medicine, of the participants in the “Juan Tomas Roig” extension chair of the “Dr. José Assef Yara”, from the University of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Ávila.

Methods: an experimental study was carried out without a control group (before and after). The study population consisted of the 10 teachers and 57 students belonging to the chair during the period 2012-2022. The ethical precepts were complied with.

Results: 10 actions were implemented to involve students in scientific-student activity in natural and traditional medicine content. They carried out 17 investigations, participated in 76 events, published 11 articles, obtained 94 awards, participated in 26 community activities and created 15 educational software. Some students won the annual national health award for scientific publication, the scientific merit award, and the best national researcher award. Two extension projects were promoted: “For Who Deserves Love” and “Butterfly.”

Conclusions: the results in the scientific-student activity of the “Juan Tomás Roig” honorary chair in the 11 years investigated were meritorious.
