Collaboration in research commits institutions and authors in common work.(1) Recognition of scientific collaboration is done through co-authorship, which can be measured by the number of authors and affiliations that sign an article, or in the case of international collaboration, due to the number of countries involved.
There are three types of collaboration: macro, medium and micro level. Those at a macro or international level usually occur in large projects for the participating countries. Those at a medium or national level are established between institutions, mostly academic, within the same region, while, with a lesser impact, there are collaborations at a micro level, which link individual authors or small research groups from the same region. institution.
In recent decades, research cooperation, and especially international cooperation, has acquired considerable relevance in the research process, given the pressures that authors and their institutions receive to comply with certain publication and institutional promotion requirements.
Contributions in research networks allow the exchange and acquisition of new knowledge, share efforts and capabilities, foster creativity, promote innovation, economize on resources and, in turn, enhance the strengths of the different research groups. In addition, they make it possible to obtain financing, in favor of higher quality results. In this way, it is expected to receive a greater number of citations, which encourages the possibility of publishing in journals with greater impact.(2) International collaboration is of such caliber in the knowledge society that those authors and institutions that do not work in this direction, they run the risk of being left behind in having a firm impact on the scientific community.
