Autologous stem cell transplant in patients with chronic peripheral arterial insufficiency of the lower limbs

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: lower limb ischemia is a chronic and common disease whose usual cause is metabolic diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Objective: to evaluate the results of autologous transplantation of adult stem cells from bone marrow in patients with chronic peripheral arterial insufficiency of the lower limbs.

Methods: pre-experimental study, at the “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola”, from February 2016 to February 2017. The universe consisted of 57 patients who attended the angiology service in the indicated period and the sample consisted of 20 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The patients received treatment with Hebervital® for four days and the autograft was performed through periarterial intramuscular injections of plasma stem cell concentrates. The variables under study were: age, sex, affected vascular sector, claudication distance and ankle-brachial index every three months, up to one year.

Results: the majority of patients were between 50 and 59 years old (40 %), of which 30 % were male. High blood pressure and smoking were the main risk factors found. An increase in the distance from claudication was found in the clinical evolution at 12 months and a more favorable hemodynamic response was obtained after autologous stem cell transplantation.

Conclusions: clinical and hemodynamic improvement was observed 12 months after treatment, which prevented the appearance of critical ischemia in the patients, demonstrating its therapeutic usefulness
