Abstract

The volume of the thyroid gland has an inestimable value for monitoring and decision behavior at different thyroid pathologies, it is also recognized as a predictor in evaluating the impact of programs of salt iodization in the population. Objective: Identify and describe the behavior of thyroid gland volume in healthy women from Ciego de Avila. Materials and Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study with descriptive observational design between March 2009 and March 2012 in healthy women 20 to 40 years living in the area of Northern Polyclinic Ciego de Avila province. We determined
the volume of the gland by ultrasonography using a mathematical formula established. For processing and presentation methods were applied descriptive statistics. Results: We included 1000 women definitely. The descriptive analysis yielded the following average ranges for the variables related to the volume of the thyroid gland, 3.34 ml ± 0.96 for the right lobe, 3.24 ml ± 0.93 for the left lobe, while the thyroid isthmus and had overall an average range of 0.14 ml ± 0.03 and 1.80 ± 6.73 ml respectively. Conclusions: The average volume of the thyroid gland in healthy women is less than that used to date reference in the country.
