Major emergency surgery in elderly people

Abstract

Surgery in the elderly increase life expectancy of man nowadays. To know how this aspect behaves in ourhospital a descriptive  observational study was carred out to analyse the behaviour of same varaibles related to mayor emergency surgery in 132 patients older than 60 years carried out in general surgery service of "Capitan Roberto Rodríguez Fernández" Hospital in Morón during the period from september 1st, 1999 to March 31st 2002. Male sprevailed and ages between 60 to 69 years. Acute abdomen was the more frequent nasological entity. Only 24.2% suffer complication and 3.8% died due to perforated ulcer and intestinal occlusion.
