Abstract

Introduction: cytogenetic prenatal diagnosis, from the cells of the amniotic fluid, constitutes the main modality used in Cuba to carry out prenatal chromosomal studies.

Objective: to analyze the results of the cytogenetic prenatal diagnosis of the Ciego de Ávila province between 2006 and 2018.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study based on the universe made up of 2,098 pregnant women, who met the research criteria, who underwent amniocentesis during the study period. The data were collected from the obstetric records of the pregnant women and from the cytogenetics registry of the laboratory of the Provincial Center of Genetics. Descriptive statistical measures were used to summarize the information and ethical principles were met.

Results: the annual mean was 161.38 tests. The highest numbers were carried out in 2009 (9.96%) and 2011 (11.20%). Ciego de Ávila (41.09%) and Morón (14.20%) were the municipalities with the most investigated pregnant women. The main indication was advanced maternal age (90.90%). Of the total studied, 69.60% had negative results, 2.40% positive and 2.20% were inconclusive. The most frequent chromosomal diseases diagnosed were numerical abnormalities (66.00%), and within these, trisomy 21 (84.85%).

Conclusions: The results of 13 years were analyzed. Advanced maternal age was the main diagnostic indication. There were few pregnant women with positive results for chromosomal abnormality. The most common chromosomal abnormalities were numerical abnormalities, and the most common, trisomy 21
