Abstract

Introduction: ignorance of cancer risk factors in children and adolescents makes early diagnosis difficult.

Objective: to describe some risk factors in onco-pediatric patients in the Ciego de Ávila province.

Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with 81 patients diagnosed with childhood cancer in the Ciego de Ávila province, who met the inclusion criteria. The study period was carried out from February 2016 to January 2018. The risk factors were grouped into modifiable and non-modifiable: prenatal and postnatal. A semi-structured interview was applied to the parent or guardian. Ethical principles were met.

Results: acute leukemia predominated among neoplasms (22,22 %). Family history of the same type of cancer was found in four patients (4,94 %), and of other types in five (6,17 %); 48,15 % of the mothers had had more than three prenatal ultrasounds and 18,52 % were active or passive smokers during pregnancy. More than half of those studied were fed mixed lactation from birth (59,00 %), and 28,39 % had a history of suffering from more than three viral diseases.

Conclusions: the following risk factors predominated: acute leukemia, a family history of another type of cancer of the same type that the children presented, almost half of the mothers underwent more than three prenatal ultrasounds, and almost a fifth were smokers. More than half of the patients had mixed lactation, and more than a fifth suffered from more than three viral diseases
