Introduction: alveolitis is a postoperative complication that is treated with medications.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of 12 % propolis tincture and Alveogyl®.
Methods: a controlled phase IV clinical trial was carried out. It was worked with 52 patients who had not received treatment. After wet and dry socket were classified, they were randomly assigned to each group. 12 % propolis tincture was applied to group I and Alveogyl® to group II. The chi square independence test was used. Ethical precepts were followed.
Results: female sex predominated (61,60 %) and the age group of 30 to 39 years (38,50 %). Cases of wet socket prevailed (76,92 %). In the dry socket, most of the patients in both groups (83,33 %) improved between two and nine days of treatment. Only in 16.67% the disease evolved unfavorably after 10 days; the results were the same in both groups. In the wet one, favorable evolution was observed in those treated with Alveogyl® (45,00 %), compared to the tincture of propolis (42,50 %); but 12,50 % did not have a favorable evolution of the alveolitis. These percentage results were good, but not significant.
Conclusions: in dry socket the results of the application of the 12 % propolis tincture and Alveogyl® were percentage good, but in the wet one they were slightly superior for the Alveogyl®. However, in neither study group was its effectiveness demonstrated.
