Development of regenerative medicine in Cuba
Abstract
Introduction: since the beginning of this century, the development of regenerative medicine was based mainly on the use of stem cells and soluble bioactive proteins in tissue engineering and gene therapy. Despite the known limitations derived from the US blockade, Cuba has managed to advance in this field.
Objective: to summarize the advances and perspectives of the use of regenerative cell therapy in various medical specialties in Cuba.
Method: the national and international literature was reviewed about the achievements reported in Cuba through the use of stem cell therapy. The search strategy included original and review articles as well as monographs. Information was sought in databases on the Internet and in the Google Scholar search engine. Works of the last five years (2011-2015) were selected, and from them the present article was elaborated.
Development: the first Cuban work related to the clinical use of stem cells dates from 1954. However, on February 24, 2004, it represented an important milestone in the beginning of research with adult stem cells in Cuba. From that date, the use of regenerative therapy in medical practice was extended to treat patients with various diseases and injuries, mostly by the specialties of angiology, orthopedics and traumatology.
