Notes for the history of medicine companies in Ciego de Ávila. 1946-2000
Abstract
Introduction: during the neocolonial period incipient drug companies were responsible for the marketing and production of drugs; cuban pharmacies ceased to be classical experimental laboratories to become shopping centers that also generated valuable research and publications. In 1959 one of the first acts of the revolutionary government was the socialization of the production and distribution of drugs, which enables effective control of quality and made them available to the entire population.
Objective: to describe the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Ciego de Ávila province from the neocolonial period until the end of the twentieth century (1946-2000).
Method: a literature search limited to the national bibliography in printed and electronic formats was carried out, it included digital material issued by the Provincial Historic Archive and the testimonies of people linked to the history of the pharmaceutical industry in Ciego de Ávila; with this information were developed the historical notes on the subject.
Development: from the 40s there were in Ciego de Ávila eleven pharmacies, located in central streets; in 1956 they amounted to 27 and at the triumph of the Revolution were taken about 28. The creation of the Medicine Company in Ciego de Ávila was a decisive step towards the socialization of public health.
Conclusions: with the triumph of the Revolution the cuban pharmaceutical industry became to move from mercantilist model imposed by capital to become a champion of the quality of medical services.
