Pulpar radicular treatment for tooth with large apical openings
Abstract
Introduction: apexification is a method that creates an artificial apical barrier in a tooth with open apex, or induce the continuation of apical development in a root with incomplete formation and necrotic pulp.
Objective: to determine the usefulness of the apexification method with pure calcium hydroxide in treating teeth with immature apices.
Method: a pre experimental study was carried out at the Teaching Odontology Clinic "Dr. Luis Alfonso Páez" in Ciego de Ávila, from January 2008 to January 2015. From a universe of 32 patients was selected a sample of 39 teeth with immature apices. After the treatment sequential evaluations were carried out to determine its effectiveness; data was collected in tables and statistically processed.
Results: 58,8 % of patients were male and 46,1 % female. Most cases (48,7 %) belonged to the age group of 8-12 years. Of the total treated teeth, 22 had fully formed roots in length but with ducts and large foramen; of 39 teeth, 20 had chronic alveolar abscess, 13 pulp necrosis and three apical granuloma. The most affected teeth were the upper central incisors.
Conclusions: most of the cases (89,5 %) progressed favorably, regardless of factors such as the age of patients, types of tooth fracture and states of root formation at the time of diagnosis of immature apex. Apexification method was useful in the treatment of teeth with incomplete root formation.
