Molar incisor hypomineralization in a sample of the child population

Introduction: molar incisor hypomineralization is considered a qualitative enamel defect occurring during the maturation phase of ameloblasts; the high number of porous areas renders the tooth susceptible, promoting fractures or dental caries that affect aesthetics and function.
Objective: to describe the characteristics of molar-incisor hypomineralization in a pediatric population.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from December 2023 to July 2024 at the Central Stomatology Clinic in Camagüey. From a population of 465 patients at the "José Luis Tasende" Primary School in Camagüey, a sample of 38 patients with molar-incisor hypomineralization who met the inclusion criteria was selected. The variables analyzed were: type of hypomineralization, sex, and prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal risk factors. A data collection form served as the primary source of information.
Results: the prevalence of hypomineralization was 9.20 %. Females accounted for 55.30 % of the sample. Patients classified under the third criterion represented 44.70 %. The most frequently noted risk factors were maternal fever (52.60 %) and Cesarean section (47.40 %); fever and amoxicillin treatment were present in 100 % of the cases.
Conclusions: approximately one in ten children in the population exhibited molar-incisor hypomineralization. Female predominance, maternal fever, Cesarean section, and fever and amoxicillin treatment in the child are characteristics to consider when designing and implementing prevention strategies.
