Introduction: in recent decades, a noticeable increase in the number of arbovirus epidemics has been observed.
Objective: to characterize the population of patients with confirmed oropouche fever in the province of Santiago de Cuba, according to selected epidemiological and clinical variables.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on patients with oropouche fever from January 2024 to January 2026. The census sample consisted of 45 patients living in rural and semi-rural health areas in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Epidemiological and clinical variables were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the information. Ethical principles for research involving human subjects were followed.
Results: the mean age was 40 years (SD: 17.50). Fever (86.70 %), followed by headache and arthralgia (68.90%), were the predominant symptoms. The mean duration of symptoms was 12.3 days (SD: 4.7). Eight patients (17.80 %) presented with persistent symptoms for more than two weeks, with a female predominance (13.30 %). In patients with hypertension (30, or 66.70 %), symptoms were prolonged.
Conclusions: oropouche virus infection showed a predominance of fever, but with highly variable symptoms and symptom persistence exceeding two weeks in hypertensive patients.
