Introduction: mobile instant messaging applications like WhatsApp are emerging as platforms with significant potential for the rapid dissemination of knowledge and microlearning.
Objective: to develop and evaluate a structured academic content management system using WhatsApp.
Methods: a descriptive study of educational innovation with a component to design, implement, and preliminarily evaluate an Academic Content Management System on WhatsApp. It was structured in five phases and tested using a WhatsApp broadcast channel targeting first-year medical students. The preliminary evaluation of the system was based on the increase in the number of followers, satisfaction surveys, and engagement metrics.
Results: the created broadcast channel gained 294 followers; according to the surveys, 92.00% of them were satisfied with the content presentation, and 88.00% found the micro-lessons useful. The average audio playback rate reached 82.30%.
Conclusions: the Academic Content Management System on WhatsApp is a viable proposal for implementing academic channels on WhatsApp. Its initial evaluation demonstrated broad acceptance among first-year medical students. A reproducible procedural framework was provided for systematizing the use of WhatsApp for educational purposes. Further research is recommended to explore the possibilities of formally integrating communication channels like the one proposed in this study into the curriculum. A comparative study of the academic outcomes of students using this system and those using traditional teaching methods is also recommended
