Mucogingival conditions and health statuses in students aged 15 to 17 years

Introduction: the marginal and attached gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and mucogingival junction are fibromucosal tissues susceptible to alterations or deformities due to congenital, developmental, or acquired defects.
Objective: to describe mucogingival conditions and health status in adolescents aged 15 to 17 years.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted in adolescents aged 15 to 17 years from the “Raúl Cervantes” school (Ciego de Ávila municipality), from July 2021 to July 2022. A sample of 56 students was selected from a population of 169 using purposive sampling. All participants underwent oral examinations to identify mucogingival alterations. Basic principles of medical ethics and the Declaration of Helsinki were respected.
Results: male adolescents predominated (57.14 %). The majority (41.07 %) were 17 years old, followed by those aged 15 (25.00 %). Pathological labial frenulum was found in 64.28%, gingivitis in 42.85 %, and gingival recession in 23.21 %. Only 8.93 % presented with gingival enlargement, hyperplasia, or fibromatosis. In 42 patients, the health of the mucogingival tissues was fair, and in 14, it was poor.
Conclusions: the evidence demonstrating the predominance of fair mucogingival health in adolescents, and the identification of the underlying disorders (pathological labial frenulum and gingivitis), provide a conceptual and practical framework for addressing this issue. Specialists' knowledge of the data on the incidence of these alterations will contribute to their timely prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
