Risk factors for chronic kidney disease in tile factory workers
Keywords:

Introduction: chronic kidney disease is a growing public health problem in Nicaragua, especially in La Paz Centro.
Objective: to describe the incidence of risk factors for chronic kidney disease in tile factory workers.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from September 10 to December 31, 2023, among tile factory workers in the 17 de Julio neighborhood, La Paz Centro municipality. A sample of 70 people was selected from a population of 120 using non-probability convenience sampling. Sociodemographic, occupational, consumption, and medical history variables were studied using a structured questionnaire. Established ethical principles were followed.
Results: the majority (62.86 %) of the workers were male, with the 21-40 age group predominating (64.28 %). Significant frequencies of certain risk factors were identified: family history of chronic kidney disease (80.00 %), frequent consumption of soft drinks (25.71 %), use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (50.00 %), low beef intake, long working hours (61.43 %), recurrent kidney infections (67.14 %), and elevated blood pressure (30.00 %).
Conclusions: the majority of workers presented risk factors for chronic kidney disease. This finding could characterize a particular risk profile in this occupational group. Further analytical research could verify the magnitude of the association between these factors and the condition, in order to implement specific health promotion and prevention strategies tailored to the working conditions and lifestyles of the studied populations.
