Introduction: sepsis is a complex syndrome resulting from the body's response to an infection and constitutes a global public health problem.
Objective: to characterize patients with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit of the “Ricardo Santana Martínez” General Teaching Hospital in Fomento during the period 2022-2024.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the intensive care area of the “Ricardo Santana Martínez” General Teaching Hospital in the Fomento municipality, Sancti Spíritus province during the period 2022-2024. The sample consisted of 213 patients admitted to the institution during a defined period. A purposive sample of 51 patients diagnosed with sepsis was selected. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were studied.
Results: a predominance of women (64.70 %) and a high concentration of patients over 80 years of age (37.20 %) were found. Respiratory infections, such as pneumonia and bronchopneumonia, were responsible for 41.10 % of sepsis cases. Streptococcus were the most common causative agents. Hospital stays ranged from 11 to 20 days. In terms of mortality, 78.40 % of patients survived sepsis.
Conclusions: the study revealed that older adults, particularly women, are the most vulnerable group to respiratory sepsis, with Streptococcus being the main causative agent. Prolonged hospital stays contribute to a complex health situation in these patients
