Nephroprotective measures in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Introduction: type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease.
Objective: to identify nephroprotective measures for patients with type 2 diabetes in the Internal Medicine Department of “Carlos Roberto Huembes” Teaching Hospital in 2023.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study in a population of 100 patients and a conventional sample of 80. Sociodemographic variables, risk factors for diabetic nephropathy and nephroprotective measures were analyzed. A data collection form was used, and percentage was used to summarize the information. Research ethics principles were followed.
Results: female patients predominated (48 %) (60 %), with the age group 40 to 59 years (72.50 %) being the most significant. 86.40% of patients were overweight, while 88.80% had been overweight for less than 10 years. High blood pressure was present in 33.80% of cases. Optimal blood glucose levels were present in 62.50 % of cases; the most commonly used antihypertensive drug (80 %) was angiotensin-2 receptor antagonist (64 patients); metformin at a dose of 850 mg was the most prevalent glucose-lowering agent (96.30 %).
Conclusions: type 2 diabetes mellitus was the main cause of chronic kidney disease, with a high prevalence of arterial hypertension as an associated comorbidity. Priority nephroprotective measures included the use of antihypertensives, along with oral hypoglycemic agents, predominantly metformin. Most patients showed adequate control of blood glucose and blood pressure.
