Community therapeutic physical exercises in paraplegic patients
Keywords:

Introduction: the physical problems caused by paraplegia can be treated with physical therapy, supported by assistive devices designed for specific motor and sensory impairments. Community-based rehabilitation is a strategy with significant social impact.
Objective: to analyze the available scientific evidence on the effectiveness of community-based therapeutic physical exercises in paraplegic patients.
Methods: a narrative literature review was carried out. The search criteria were based on MeSH and DeCS descriptors: paraplegia, physical exercise, exercise therapy, physical therapy, and rehabilitation, using the bibliographic databases Medline, PubMed, and CUMED. These terms were also used to search Latin American databases such as LILACS and Redalyc, the academic directory Dialnet, the search engine Google Scholar, and the online scientific library SciELO. A total of 32 articles published between 2019 and 2024 in Spanish and English were selected.
Development: the active participation of paraplegic patients in rehabilitation should begin from the moment the spinal cord injury occurs. The reduction in the number of complications is directly related to the quality of care received in the early stages.
Conclusions: Community-based therapeutic physical exercises help reduce the side effects caused by lack of mobility and improve the quality of life of paraplegic patients. The research provided valuable information to consider this rehabilitation approach as a valid and essential option
