Condylar distraction according to facial biotypes in orthodontic patients
Keywords:
centric dental occlusion, centric relation, mandibular condyle, orthodonticsAbstract
Introduction: during closure, it is common for an interference or premature point to occur between the maxilla and the mandible, causing the latter to slip from its centric relation to maximum intercuspation. This movement, known as centric slippage, causes distraction of the condyle. Each facial biotype presents a certain degree of condylar distraction.
Objective: to estimate the frequency of condylar distraction greater than 2 mm in the vertical plane, according to the facial biotype.
Methods: a cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out in a universe of 74 patients from January to February 2022. The variables studied were sex and facial biotype. The percentage was used as a summary measure of information. Ethical principles for scientific research on human beings were respected.
Results: 36 patients (48.64 %) had distraction records of 2 mm or more; 47.22 % were dolichofacial; 16.67 % mesofacial, and 36.11 % brachyfacial. Condylar distraction was more frequent in females.
Conclusions: almost half of the people studied presented condylar distraction greater than 2 mm; but it was more frequent in those with a dolichofacial biotype and female sex, followed by brachyfacial and mesofacial patients. The study provided evidence on the importance of centered articulator mounting to obtain the condylar position indicator, and consequently define the diagnosis and treatment for each patient, according to their facial biotype.
