Mobile-assisted health in the elderly with chronic illness. Integrative review
Keywords:
geriatric assessment, mobile applications, mobile health, telemedicineAbstract
Introduction: mobile-assisted health is a novel concept. It is based on the use of wireless communication devices, as supports in clinical practice and public health management, especially in the care of chronic patients.
Objective: to analyze the available evidence on mobile applications used as means of assessment, care, and rehabilitation in chronically ill older adults.
Methods: an integrative review of the literature on the topic was carried out, published between January 2018 and May 2023 in the Virtual Health Library, PubMed, EBSCOhost, and SciELO databases. The data were analyzed following the methodology of the critical reading skills program.
Results: in total, 22 studies were collected from three continents: 36.36% from Europe, 27.27% from Asia, 22.73% from Latin America, and 13.64% from North America. Of them, 50% focused on clinical assessment and monitoring, 22.73% addressed care, and 22.73% addressed the physical or cognitive rehabilitation of chronically ill older adults; In all of them, mobile applications were used, both prototypes in development and interactive.
Conclusions: there is a wide range of mobile devices and applications to evaluate, care for and rehabilitate older adults. Those focused on cognitive stimulation to preserve mental abilities and delay the deterioration associated with aging, and those aimed at nutritional evaluations, stand out. These very effective resources complement daily medical practice and contribute to significantly optimizing healthcare.
