Application of cryosurgery in the treatment of oral traumatic fibroma

Introduction: cryosurgery is a simple therapeutic modality, consisting of the application of minimal temperatures, in an effective and controlled manner, for the local destruction of injured oral cells and tissues.
Objective: to evaluate the therapeutic usefulness of cryosurgery in the excision of oral traumatic fibroma.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on 25 adult patients with traumatic oral fibroma, treated in the stomatological consultation of the Specialty Polyclinic of the “Saturnino Lora Torres” University Clinical Surgical Provincial Hospital, in Santiago de Cuba, between April 2022 and April 2023. The variables were analyzed: sex, age, number of applications, freezing time, thawing time, clinical signs and symptoms, and evaluation of the repair. The ethical principles of the research were complied with.
Results: freezing between 20 and 30 seconds, and thawing between 91 and 120 seconds, were the most effective in destroying damaged mouth mucosa. The tissues regenerated between seven and 14 days after the application of two to four cycles in a therapeutic session. The absence of symptoms was the most relevant in the post-surgical evolution of the lesions in 64 % of the patients.
Conclusions: cryosurgery is a useful, harmless, and atraumatic technique to eliminate damaged oral tissues and facilitate their regeneration. The repair and growth of the new epithelium proceeds normally, without post-surgical complications such as local infection and bleeding. The research provided evidence on the effectiveness of the cryosurgical method for the removal of oral traumatic fibroma.
