Introduction: renal oncocytoma is a rare tumor. In the differential diagnosis it must be distinguished from renal chromophagus cell carcinoma.
Objective: to present a patient with renal oncocytoma, diagnosed after the surgical procedure. Which was the first reported in the internal medicine service of the "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital since 1962.
Case presentation: male patient, 60 years old, with no personal or family history of interest. Two months earlier, he presented with lower back pain, urination difficulties, and hematuria; therefore, he went to the emergency service of the community polyclinic. Given the persistence of symptoms, he was treated in the internal medicine service of the hospital, where it was decided to admit him. On physical examination, he reported pain during palpation on the right flank, where an abdominal mass with lumbar contact was noted. With the presumptive diagnosis of renal carcinoma, he underwent surgical exploration and a tumor was found. The result of the pathological study confirmed that it was a renal oncocytoma.
Conclusions: complementary studies and timely surgical intervention enabled the favorable evolution of the patient's condition. This case provided evidence on the importance of taking into account the symptoms of the patients and the necessary imaging studies, to rule out or confirm this condition in the differential diagnosis of abdominal tumor syndrome.
