Introduction: temporomandibular disorders constitute a set of alterations of the stomatognathic system that lead many patients to dental emergency consultations and rehabilitation rooms in search of a timely solution.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of Su-Jok therapy in the emergency treatment of temporomandibular disorders in the comprehensive rehabilitation department of the “Julio Castillo” University Polyclinic of Chambas, Ciego de Ávila.
Methods: A single-group quasi-experimental study was carried out; From a universe of 48 patients, a sample of 39 was selected, who met the research criteria. The anamnestic subindex of the Helkimo index was used to evaluate temporomandibular disorders. The variables were also evaluated: pain intensity, symptoms and general effectiveness of the treatment.
Results: at the beginning of the intervention, 69.20 % of the patients presented complex symptoms of dysfunction, moderate pain intensity prevailed for 25.60 % and muscle fatigue occurred in 96.40 %. After applying the Su-Jok therapy, it was found that 74.40 % of the patients did not present appreciable pain and muscle fatigue occurred in only 25.60% of the people surveyed. The therapy was effective in 66.60% of the study population.
Conclusions: Su-Jok therapy proved to be an effective treatment option, easy to apply and constitutes a novel alternative for the care of emergencies generated by temporomandibular disorders.
