Abstract

Introduction: Helicobacter pylory is an important cause of gastritis.

Objective: to describe the clinical and histological characteristics and the results of the urease test in children with gastritis assisted at the “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” Hospital from Ciego de Ávila.

Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study in children with gastritis treated at the Provincial General Teaching Hospital “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” from Ciego de Ávila. From the universe of 248 children, a sample of 196 who met the inclusion criteria was taken. The following variables were evaluated: age, sex, municipality of origin, risk factors, clinical symptoms, types of gastritis, histological results and urease test results.

Results: the male sex predominated and the most frequent age group was between 15 and 17 years. The municipalities with the highest prevalence were Ciego de Ávila and Morón and the most relevant risk factor was the consumption of untreated water. The common clinical symptoms were abdominal pain and heartburn. Erythematous gastritis predominated as an endoscopic finding and acute gastritis as a histological result, followed by chronic gastritis. The urease test was positive in 99 patients with a histological diagnosis of gastritis for 73.80%.

Conclusions: female sex, adolescents, the municipality of Ciego de Ávila, and the consumption of untreated water were the prevalent epidemiological data in the study, as well as abdominal pain and acute gastritis as clinical and histological results. There was a high correspondence between the positive results of the urease test and the histological diagnosis of gastritis in children
