The professional improvement of the directors of medical universities from the perspective of science, technology and society

Introduction: the social impact of medical sciences universities is related to an adequate improvement of managers in science, technology, society and innovation, for a better management of university processes.
Objective: to assess the conceptual background, references and current trends of the professional improvement of the directors of medical universities from the perspective of science, technology and society.
Methods: a systematic review of the literature available in printed and electronic format in Spanish, English and Portuguese was carried out. The PRISMA 2020 Declaration, guide for systematic reviews, was taken into account for its preparation. A total of 39 full-text articles and documents were selected and no study synthesis methods were included (inclusion-exclusion criteria) because only the science, technology and society perspective in universities and in the improvement of managers is identified as an eligible study.
Development: in the literature, insufficiencies are reflected in the theoretical conception of the improvement of managers in universities of medical sciences. The most outstanding research recognizes the role of the university as a relevant actor for social development. The main publications focus the attention of academics particularly in Latin America and Cuba. It is considered that the improvement of managers is a key aspect for the achievement of an innovative university model.
Conclusions: the science-technology-society perspective, due to its contribution to the management of university processes, should be included in the improvement of the directors of the medical sciences universities.
