Abstract
Introduction: population aging constitutes an achievement of public health policies, however, old age has been culturally assumed as synonymous with fragility and dependence, which configures a set of negative ideas that eventually lead to discrimination and social isolation.
Objective: to analyze the characteristics of domestic abuse of the elderly in six offices of the Popular Council “La Cuba”, in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba province.
Methods: an analytical cross-sectional study was carried out from a universe of 491 people over 60 years of age belonging to six offices of the Popular Council “La Cuba”, in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba province, who gave their consent to participate in the study during the year 2020. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, marital status, education, type of family, type of abuse, family functioning according to the family functioning test (FF-SIL) and main commissioner. The psychological evaluation was carried out using the Hasegawa test.
Results: the group of 80 years and older predominated, the female sex, the primary level of schooling and the elderly belonging to extended and dysfunctional families. The most frequent types of abuse were psychological, followed by financial; A greater number of signs of abuse were observed in those who lived with their children.
Conclusions: the presence and characteristics of domestic abuse in the elderly population in a region of Cuba are corroborated, which is of special interest for health policy makers, if the sustained aging of the Cuban population is taken into accountDownloads
