Magnetotherapy as an alternative treatment in patients with gonarthrosis
Abstract
Introduction: the knee is one of the joints that supports the transmission of weight loads and movement of the lower limb and represents the most frequent location of osteoarthritis. This joint, being very vulnerable, generates greater disability.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of magnetotherapy in reducing the intensity of pain in patients with gonarthrosis treated at the Antonio Maceo Community Teaching Polyclinic (Center) in Ciego de Ávila municipality.
Methods: a pre-experimental study (before-after) was carried out in patients with gonarthrosis, in the period: January/2017-April/2019. We worked with all 79 patients who met the research criteria. The variables were evaluated: age group, sex, occupation, clinical manifestations and the degree of pain intensity that was measured with the Visual Analog Scale. Ethical principles were met.
Results: the highest frequency occurred in the age group of 60 to 69 years, the female sex and housewives. Pain, joint creaking, limitation of movement and inflammation decreased after the intervention and only the deformities remained. Before receiving treatment, most presented severe pain and after this category only remained in five patients.
Conclusions: magnetotherapy was an effective treatment in patients with gonarthrosis under the conditions of this investigation
